2016/2017 CDF Essay Competition Winners

The CDF Essay Competition 2016/2017 Prize Presentation was held just before the Joint Staff Conference (JSC) at MINDEF HQ on Monday, 2nd October 2017. Winners received their awards from CDF, LG Perry Lim, to great applause from the gathered senior leadership. The winners were:


First Prize - $1,000 award

  • MAJ Jeffrey Ng Zhaohong for his essay Crowding Out the Lone Wolf -- Crowdsourcing Intelligence to Prevent Lone-wolf attacks.


Second Prize - $750 award

  • ME6 Calvin Seah Ser Thong for his essay Survivability of a Smart Nation. 


Third Prize - $500 award

  • MAJ Lee Jan for his essay The United States'’ Rebalancing Strategy and its Maritime Dimension -- A Critical Assessment.


Merit Awards - $300 award

  • MAJ Leong Tyng Wey for his Big Data & Systems Thinking: Implications for the SAF as a Learning Organisation.
  • ME5 Wong Chong Wai for his essay The Rejuvenation of China and a United States in Transition: Challenges and Recommendations for the MINDEF/SAF.
  • CPT Lim Guang He for his essay Deterrence? What about Dissuasion?
  • MAJ Aaron Ng Qibo for his essay Open Source Intelligence in the Digital Age?
  • LTC Leonard Wong Loong He, MAJ Teo Wei Keong, CPT Peter Alexandre Chua Li Young & LTA Joshua Ong Wee Tiong for their essay Swarm in Warfare & How SAF Could Accelerate Adoption of the Swarm Innovation.
  • ME6 Calvin Seah Ser Thong & ME4 Chai Chang Yu for their essay Augmented Reality in the SAF.
  • LTC Eileen Chua for her essay The 'Chinese Dream' and How It Shaped China's Foreign Policy.


Commendation Awards - $200 award

  • CPT Lee Zi Yang for his essay Singapore in the Choppy ASEAN Waters: When did the Woes begin and what can the SAF offer?
  • LTA(NS) Philip Chan for his essay The 80-20 Rule in Action: A New Approach to Optimise Force Preparation for Third Generation Fighting Units.
  • ME5 Chareonsri Jomthip for his essay Spirals of Fear and Hostility: The Danger of Threat Assessments Becoming Self-Fulfilling Prophecies.
  • MAJ Oliver Xu Chongzhi for their essay Maritime Dimensions of the United States' "Rebalancing Strategy" Stabilising or Escalatory.
  • CPT Zech Tan & CPT Thia Shan Zhi for their essay From Yesterday to Tomorrow: Updates for Total Defence.
  • LTC(NS) Denzil Titt for his essay Can the Rabbit Roar? Concepts for Making every Soldier a Leader.
  • ME5 David Bey, ME5 Ng Wei Rong & CPT Sim Bao Chen for their essay The Proliferation of Small Drones: Trends, Implications and Recommendations for Singapore.
  • MAJ Shewan Goh for his essay 2035: The Year Unmanned Aircraft Will Dominate the Air.
  • ME6 Vincent Chan for his essay Humans made Obsolete in Robotics Warfare.
  • ME4 Nigel Chong Jia Wei for his essay Rethinking Military Aircraft Maintenance.


The winning essays were selected by a panel of six judges. This year's judges were:

With the close of the CDF Essay Competition 2016/2017, POINTER will begin accepting entries for next year's competition, the CDF Essay Competition 2017/2018, in November 2017.
