2014/2015 CDF Essay Competition Winners




The CDF Essay Competition 2014/2015 Prize Presentation was held just before the Joint Staff Conference (JSC) at MINDEF HQ on Monday, 02 November 2015. Winners received their awards from CDF, MG Perry Lim, to great applause from the gathered senior leadership. The winners were:




First Prize - $1,500 award and plaque

  • MAJ Chandran s/o Nadarajoo (Army) for their essay Jekyll and Hyde: Would Nurturing a Strong National Identity Trump a Religiously Radicalised Identity?


Second Prize - $1,000 award and plaque 

  • CPT Seah Jun Hao (Air Force) for his essay The case for Pre-Emptive Warfare and its Implication for Singapore. 


Third Prize - $500 award and a plaque

  • ME4 Toh Bao En (Joint) for her essay “Swimming in Sensors, Drowning in Data”. Big Data Analytics for Military Intelligence.


Merit Awards - $300 award and a plaque

  • LTC Tan Wee Heng, Melvyn (Air Force) for his The Concept of Decisive Battle and the Key Takeaways for the SAF.
  • MAJ Lim Han Wei (Navy) for her essay Code for Unplanned Encounters a SEA (CUES) and Maritime Stability in the Indo-Pacific.
  • LTA(NS) Chin Hui Han (Army) for his essay Maskirova in the Information Age.
  • MAJ Bernard Tay (Army) for his essay Is the SAF’s Deterrence Posture still Relevant as the Nature of Warfare continues to Evolve?
  • MAJ Choy Yong Cong (Army) for his essay China’s Strategic Culture in the South China Sea and Recommendations for ASEAN and US.
  • CPT Ng Zhaohong, Jeffrey (Air Force) for his essay Information Warfare – Challenges and Opportunities for Militaries in the Information Age.
  • ME4 Goh Qi Wen, Gerald (Air Force) for their essay Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and the Future of Airpower: A Technological Perspective.


Commendation Awards - $300 award

  • MAJ Chuah Meng Soon (Navy) for his essay Restrictions on Foreign Military Activities in the Exclusive Economic Zone: Major Powers’ “Lawfare”.
  • MAJ Koh Zhi Guo, Daniel (Navy) for his essay To what extent can Singapore’s Maritime Security Outlook can be considered as exceptional within Southeast Asia?
  • CPT Chen Jingkai (Army) for his essay Cognitive Biases: the Root of Irrationality in Military Decision-Making.
  • LTC Eng Cheng Heng (Navy) for their essay The Strategy Bridge: Linking the Tactical and Operational Battles to the National Interest(s).
  • CPT Tung Wanrong (Air Force) for his essay Impact of China’s Military Rise on the Formation of a Coherent Political-Security Community in Southeast Asia.
  • ME5 Ho Wei Seng, Alan (Joint) for his essay Cyber Attack and the Roles Military could Play to Support the National Cyber Security Efforts
  • CPT Pek Wee Kian (Air Force) for his essay The Five Power Defence Arrangements: A Contemporary Assessment.
  • CPT Lee Wen Jie, Jamie (Air Force) for his essay Fighting Just Wars in Asymmetric Conflict Structures.
  • LTA Ng Yeow Choon (Air Force) for his essay Transplanting EU’s History into ASEAN’s Future: Implications of Regional Economic Integration on Defence Cooperation
  • ME5 Seah Ser Thong, Calvin (Army) & ME4 Harold Lim (Army) for their essay Critical Assessment of the Likelihood of Inter-State War in Southeast Asia in the 21st Century.
  • ME4 Lim Guang Nian, Gabriel (Air Force) for his essay The Future of the Singapore Armed Forces Amidst the Transforming Strategic, Geopolitical and Domestic Environment.


The winning essays were selected by a panel of six judges. This year's judges were:

  • COL Alan Goh, Hd, NPL
  • COL Gaurav Keerthi, Hd, APD
  • DR Ong Wei Chong, Associate Professor, RSIS


With the close of the CDF Essay Competition 2014/2015, POINTER will begin accepting entries for next year's competition, the CDF Essay Competition 2015/2016, in November 2015. Details and regulations will be announced at a later date.
