The Chief of Defence Force (CDF) Essay Competition is an annual competition aimed at encouraging SAF officers to actively research and reflect on professional issues, and to share their knowledge, ideas and views through writing. The competition is organised by POINTER, Journal of the SAF, part of the Goh Keng Swee Command and Staff College, SAFTI Military Institute. It is open to all SAF Officers, Military Experts, Warrant Officers, Officer Cadets and DSTA personnel. Three top prizes, seven Merit and ten Commendation awards are presented for the best essays.




The CDF Essay Competition 2012/2013 Prize Presentation was held just after the SAF Seminar (Army) on Monday, 19 August 2013. Winners received their awards from CDF, LG Ng Chee Meng, to great applause from the gathered senior leadership. The winners were:

First Prize - $1,500 award and plaque

CPT Alvin Chan (Army) for his essay Managing Strategic and Tactical Uncertainty: Mission Command in the Third Generation Army 


Second Prize - $1,000 award and plaque 

  • LTC Aaron Beng Yao Cheng (Navy) for his essay Submarine Procurement in Southeast Asia: Potential for Conflict and Prospects for Cooperation 

 


Third Prize - $500 award and a plaque

  • MAJ Benjamin Kwan Shee Kong (Air Force) for his essay Developing a Strategic-Level Commander: Requisite Skills and Attributes 

 


Merit Awards - $300 award and a plaque

  • LTC Psalm Lew Boon Cou (Army) for his essay Branding Singapore through the Armed Forces and its Leaders

  • LTC Lim Huay Wen (Navy) for her essay Southeast Asia: US Benign Neglect No Longer an Option

  • LTC Quek Seoh Hiong (Air Force) for his essay Motivation and Retention in the SAF

  • MAJ Nicholas Chng (Air Force) for his essay Would You Argue that Singapore's Foreign and Defence Policies are Operating in Stark Contradiction to One Another? A Discussion on Singapore’s Foreign and Defence Policies

  • CPT Bertram Ang Chun Hou (Navy) for his essay Safety as an Operational Enabler

  • LTA Jin Chentian (Air Force) for his essay Just Deterrence: An Expansion of Just War Theory and its Application to Contemporary Defence Policy

  • ME6 Chia Hee Chen (Air Force) for his essay Leadership Challenges in Conducting OOTW in a Foreign Country

 


Commendation Awards - $300 award

  • CPT Mani Siddarth (Army) and CPT Rueban s/o Manokara (Army) for their essay The Legality of Pre-Emptive Self-Defence and its Impact on the Defence Strategy of Small States

  • LTA Lim Guang He (Air Force) for his essay The SAF's Security Dilemma: A Technological Perspective

  • ME5 Calvin Seah Ser Thong (Army), ME4 Kelvin Yap Chun Hong (Army) and Ms Malini T Deepan (Army) for their essay Technology - Boon or Bane?

  • ME5 Goh Choon Huat (Air Force) for his essay ASEAN's Contribution towards Southeast Asia's Peace and Stability

  • ME5 Koh Boon Yeow (Air Force) for his essay Overcoming the Support Challenges in Network Centric Warfare - An Engineering and Logistical Perspective

  • ME4 Stanley Lim Wee Tong (Joint) and ME4 Ho Kee Meng (Joint) for their essay US Rebalancing Strategies and their Implications for MINDEF and the SAF

  • ME4 Wong Chong Wai (Air Force) for his essay Reaching Out through Effective Branding: Connecting with the SAF Mission

With the close of the CDF Essay Competition 2012/2013, POINTER will begin accepting entries for next year's competition, the CDF Essay Competition 2013/2014, in October/November 2013. Details and regulations will be announced at a later date.
