Singapore has enjoyed 47 years of peace and progress as an independent nation. Through these years, a strong and operationally ready SAF has ensured the stability that safeguarded our interests and advanced our way of life. Our strong and sustained commitment to National Service and defence spending has built up the SAF into an effective and technologically advanced military force that is respected and capable of meeting Singapore's defence needs. The core mission of the SAF remains to deter, and if deterrence fails, swiftly defeat any potential threats to our sovereignty and security. The SAF has also contributed meaningfully in international security and reconstruction missions as well as disaster relief operations in other parts of the world.

The SAF must stand ready at all times to respond quickly and decisively when called upon to meet our mission objectives. Therefore our servicemen and women train under realistic conditions to maintain their proficiency. In this regard, I am heartened to witness, in my visits to units and training exercises, the high level of commitment, fighting spirit, toughness and professionalism displayed by our soldiers, sailors and airmen in both regulars and national servicemen.

National Service remains the bedrock of our defence force. This year, we mark 45 years of National Service with the theme "Celebrating 45 Years of National Service: From Fathers to Sons". It is appropriate that we pay tribute to three generations of more than 900,000 NSmen who have contributed their time and service to the defence of our nation. Let us also show our appreciation to their families, friends and employers for the continual support. May we also remember those who have lost their lives in the course of their service.

As we commemorate SAF Day, let us renew our pledge and commitment to defend our nation. The SAF remains the ultimate guarantor of our security and independence. On behalf of all Singaporeans, I thank you once again for your service and your dedication to safeguarding our home.
