Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI) General (GEN) Gatot Nurmantyo was conferred Singapore's prestigious military award, the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) [or Meritorious Service Medal (Military)], by President Tony Tan Keng Yam. Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen presented the award to GEN Gatot at an investiture held at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) this afternoon.
GEN Gatot was conferred the award for his significant contributions in his former capacity as Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (TNI-AD) in enhancing the close and long-standing ties between TNI-AD and the Singapore Army. Under GEN Gatot's leadership, both armies have enhanced interoperability and mutual understanding through the regular conduct of key bilateral exercises, such as Exercise Safkar Indopura and Exercise Chandrapura. The wide range of activities between both armies, including visits, professional exchanges, and cross-attendance of courses, have also strengthened the rapport and camaraderie between their personnel.
GEN Gatot, who is in Singapore for his introductory visit, called on Acting Prime Minister Mr Teo Chee Hean, Dr Ng, and Chief of Defence Force Major-General Perry Lim. GEN Gatot also inspected a Guard of Honour at MINDEF and visited the Republic of Singapore Navy's Formidable-class frigate, RSS Tenacious, at Changi Naval Base as part of his visit.
