SAF Servicemen Stand Guard 24/7 for Singapore's Defence

Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Mr Teo Chee Hean visited Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) from 811 Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment (811 SIR), at Jurong Island this morning. He was accompanied by Senior Minister of State for Defence Mr Ong Ye Kung and senior officers from the Singapore Army.

During his visit, DPM Teo interacted with the servicemen as they carried out security operations around the island. He was also given a briefing on their deployment and experienced first-hand the tasks and challenges of the NSmen deployed on an observation tower. Speaking after the visit, DPM Teo reiterated the importance of the SAF's role in deterring any threats against Singapore's peace and security. He said, "Our National Servicemen in the SAF and Home Team play a very direct role in protecting the security of Singapore, together with our Regulars, full-time NSFs and our volunteers."

Amidst an evolving security landscape globally and regionally, DPM Teo cautioned that no country would be immune to security threats such as terrorism, and highlighted the importance of preserving the peace and stability that Singapore enjoys today. He said, "There is a heightened threat of terrorist attacks, not just in South East Asia, but around the world. That is why I think it is important that Singaporeans ourselves must become more aware of what we can do if we are caught up in such a situation." DPM Teo added that it remains important for Singaporeans to be vigilant and that the SAF will continue to work closely with the Home Team agencies to counter any threats and protect Singapore.

Since 2001, the SAF has been conducting security operations at key installations such as Changi Airport, Jurong Island and Sembawang Wharves to boost Singapore's vigilance and defence against the threat of terrorism.
