Reply to Media Queries on Changes to Disciplinary Framework for Multiple IPPT Defaulters

In response to media queries on the changes to the disciplinary framework for multiple Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) defaulters, the following reply was issued:

"The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) provides a uniform test to measure the basic fitness levels of our servicemen. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) ensures that servicemen keep physically fit and the IPPT complements our current combat fitness programme.

The SAF continuously reviews our fitness training system to ensure that it is relevant and effective. The IPPT Preparatory Training (IPT) fitness regime was enhanced in September 2014 and the new IPPT format was implemented in April this year to motivate our servicemen to do well and keep fit.

Physical fitness is a personal responsibility. All eligible Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) are required to take the IPPT at least once during their birthday window. The SAF maintains a tough stand against IPPT defaulters, and disciplinary actions will be taken against NSmen who do not take their IPPT annually. As the SAF moves towards a motivating fitness training system that engenders greater ownership of fitness, we will also review the disciplinary framework for IPPT defaulters."
