In response to media queries on the court case of 3SG (NS) Wang Yinchu for his offence of Absence Without Leave (AWOL), MINDEF has issued the following reply:

 "The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) notes the court's decision to extend the detention period of 3SG (NS) Wang Yinchu from 3 weeks to 18 months for the offence of Absence Without Leave (AWOL).

Under the Enlistment Act, all male Singaporeans and Permanent Residents must serve National Service upon reaching 18 years old. AWOL is a serious offence. We will continue to take stern disciplinary action against servicemen who commit AWOL offences."
