A Hard-fought Victory for Nanyang Polytechnic at National Education Gaming Championship

29 June 2014 - Nanyang Polytechnic was crowned winners of the 2014 National Education Gaming Championship (NEGC) this afternoon. They emerged victorious among 64 teams from 24 schools to walk away with the challenge trophy and $3000 in cash. The finals were held at Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College Central earlier this afternoon where ITE College Central and Republic Polytechnic were also named the first and second runners-up respectively.

The winning team, represented by team captain Evan Chan, spoke about how the game play has enhanced their understanding about what it takes to be a fighting fit and thinking soldier. He said, "NEGC taught us that teamwork and communication is important to achieve success. Everyone in the team and every weapon has a role to play".Over the past two months, 640 students from secondary schools, ITEs and polytechnics went through several training sessions to learn the game, strategise and work as a team. The preliminaries and finals of the championship were held over three days from 27 to 29 June 2014 and saw teams battling against each other for the championship.

For the first time, NEGC was one of the key highlights of Campus Game Fest (CGF), Singapore's biggest Internet and gaming event for youth. Visitors to NEGC had the opportunity to try their hand at Virtual Battlespace 2 (VBS2) and Decisive Combat, both of which are innovative learning platforms used by the SAF. Weapons used in VBS2 such as Singapore Assault Rifle 21 (SAR 21), Section Automatic Weapon (SAW), General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) and Man-portable Anti-Tank, Anti-DooR (MATADOR) were also on display for visitors to try out. Director, Nexus, Colonel Roland Ng, officiated at the closing ceremony of the 4th NEGC. Organised by Nexus, Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and supported by the Ministry of Education, NEGC is an engaging platform for youths to learn more  about the technological capabilities of the 3rd Generation SAF. NEGC is based on PC-based virtual simulation training software, VBS2, which has been modified as a first-person shooter game and is used by the SAF for training purposes.
