Fact Sheet: Recipients of the Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholarship

Introduced in 1971, the Singapore Armed Forces Overseas Scholarship (SAFOS) is a prestigious scholarship, widely recognised as second only to the President's Scholarship. The SAFOS is awarded annually to outstanding service personnel who have excelled in their studies and co-curricular activities, and performed well in the officer cadet course. The SAFOS has attracted the best and brightest from each cohort of school-leavers to join the SAF. Upon completion of their tertiary education, the scholars return to the armed forces to assume a variety of challenging appointments to groom them for the highest level of leadership positions in the SAF and the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). There are 292 SAFOS recipients to date.

Past SAF overseas scholars include Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Swee Say, Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Social and Family Development and Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Defence Major-General (NS) Chan Chun Sing, Acting Minister for Manpower and Senior Minister of State for Ministry of National Development Brigadier-General (NS) Tan Chuan-Jin,
