The Government of Singapore is saddened to learn that General Vo Nguyen Giap passed away on 4 October 2013. General Giap played a pivotal role in Vietnam's fight for independence. On behalf of the Government of Singapore, Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen signed the condolence book for General Giap's passing, at the Vietnam Embassy in Singapore this morning. The condolence message is as follows:

"On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I offer our heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.  General Vo Nguyen Giap was a Vietnamese hero who deeply loved his country.  He was a revered military strategist who fought successfully for Vietnam's independence.  His legacy and patriotism will not be forgotten."
