Flexible Fitness Training Regime for NSmen
We thank Ms Geraldine Tan-Wee Xiu-Yin for her feedback in her letter "Put a cap on remedial training for reservists" dated 3 Nov 2012.
The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) recognises that our Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) have to balance the demands of work, family and National Service (NS) duties. MINDEF and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) are therefore committed to providing flexible ways for NSmen to train for and achieve their required fitness standards.
NSmen have a one-year period, starting from the individual’s birthday, to pass their annual Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT). In the first nine months, NSmen have the flexibility to plan their fitness regime and pass the IPPT. Those who did not pass the IPPT within this nine-month window are required to attend three months of Remedial Training (RT), but could complete RT earlier if they are able to pass the IPPT before the end of the RT. NSmen who require more than three months to complete all 20 RT sessions may request to extend the duration of RT for up to one more month.
MINDEF and the SAF encourages NSmen who require assistance to prepare for the IPPT to participate in the enhanced IPPT Preparatory Training (IPT), a voluntary programme designed to improve fitness levels by setting progressive personal performance targets.
To better allow NSmen to manage their individual needs and schedules, they can book their non-In-Camp Training IPPT, IPT and RT sessions via the NS portal (www.ns.sg), by phone (1800-3676767), or via the free "MyIPPT" mobile application (Apple Apps Store).
MINDEF will continue to review its NS IPPT system to help NSmen prepare for and pass the IPPT.
