Hi guys, there's been some online chatter recently about the effectiveness of the pixelised patterns on the SAF's combat uniforms. So we thought maybe we should assure you (esp our NSmen) that the patterns and designs weren't "plucked" from the air. Quite a bit of serious research went into it - studies, field trials, comparative testing, field assessments, etc.
The pixelised combat uniform is designed to be lighter and more comfy. If you're one of those who did the switch, you might know what we mean. Also, it's designed to reduce abrasions (important!! especially for route march) and also includes some other interesting features. Did you know that you can even fold up the shirt to turn it into an improvised triangular bandage? Nifty!
Anyway, regarding the combat uniform and the pixelised pattern, here's what BG Chia Choon Hoong, Commander 9 Division and Chief Infantry Officer, has to say:"The Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) introduced a new Army combat uniform in 2008 to enhance the survivability and operational effectiveness of our soldiers. Features of the new combat uniforms include enhanced camouflage, superior fabric and a better functional design. The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) personnel would be equipped with similar No. 4 uniforms in the later part of 2012.In the development of the uniform, the SAF together with the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), conducted extensive studies and field trials to validate the effectiveness of the design. Several versions were developed for comparative testing and subjected through detailed field assessments. The shape, pattern and colours of the pixelised patterns were designed for specific operating environments.
For example, the Army's green pixelised pattern is optimised for a vegetated environment while the Air Force's and Navy's greyish-blue pixelised patterns are designed to blend into air base installations and on board ships, respectively. A separate desert camouflage pattern improves the survivability and operational effectiveness of soldiers operating in Afghanistan. The SAF's combat uniforms are made of a light-weight material and utilise a new fabric designed to transfer perspiration to the outer surface more quickly, allowing more air to circulate. The functional design allows for a reduction of pressure points, minimising abrasion and optimising soldiers' performance in the operating environment. The SAF will continue to review and improve the design of its uniforms to ensure that they remain relevant and effective."To find out more about the features of the SAF pixelised combat uniform.
