General (GEN) Nguyen Tan Cuong, Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army and Vietnam Vice Minister of National Defence, called on Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing this morning after inspecting a Guard of Honour at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF). During the meeting, they reaffirmed the warm and friendly bilateral defence relations between Singapore and Vietnam, and exchanged views on regional security issues of mutual interest, including cooperation under the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and the ADMM-Plus.

GEN Cuong is in Singapore for an introductory visit from 4 to 5 November 2026. As part of his visit, he held a roundtable discussion with Chief of Defence Force Vice Admiral Aaron Beng. He also visited the Multi-Mission Range Complex and ST Engineering Hub.

GEN Cuong’s visit highlights the warm and friendly defence relations between Singapore and Vietnam, underpinned by the Defence Cooperation Agreement signed in 2009 and renewed in 2022, and further reinforced by the elevation of bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2025. Both defence establishments interact regularly through high-level visits, bilateral dialogues, professional exchanges, and multilateral exercises.
