Minister for Defence Reaffirms Strong Defence Ties with Counterparts at 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue

 

Minister for Defence Mr Chan Chun Sing met his counterparts on the sidelines of the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD) today, including Defence Ministers and representatives from the European Union (EU), New Zealand and Indonesia.

During the call with EU Vice-President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, both parties reaffirmed the friendly relations between Singapore and the EU. Mr Chan and Ms Kallas also discussed international security developments and expressed their joint commitment to continue cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

During the call with New Zealand Minister of Defence Judith Collins KC, both Ministers reaffirmed the close and longstanding bilateral defence relationship and reiterated their commitment to deepen defence cooperation in new and emerging areas. They discussed the importance of upholding the regional rules-based order, such as through continuing our close cooperation under the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) and the Five Power Defence Arrangements. 

During the call with Indonesian Vice-Minister of Defense Donny Ermawan Taufanto, both Ministers reaffirmed the close and longstanding defence relationship between Singapore and Indonesia. They also discussed ways to further defence cooperation between both countries, following the implementation of the Defence Cooperation Agreement in 2024. 

In addition, Mr Chan also met the Finland Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen, Netherlands Minister of Defence Rubens Brekelmans, the United States Congressional Delegation led by Senator Pete Ricketts (R-Nebraska) which also included Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-Illinois), and the United States Congressional Delegation led by Chair of the House Committee on the Chinese Communist Party John Moolenar (R-Michigan) which included Rep. Brian Mast (R-Florida) and Rep. Greg Stanton (D-Arizona).
