Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean presented the Overseas Service Medal to 39 Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel at a ceremony held this morning, in recognition of their contributions to the SAF's overseas missions.
Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Teo noted the tough and challenging conditions the recipients had to operate in as well as the risks involved for such missions."Our SAF servicemen deployed for operations overseas perform important work. There are always risks associated with such missions", he added, "to mitigate the risks, we make sure that our servicemen are well trained for their deployment, and are well prepared to deal with any contingencies.” Mr Teo also commended the medal recipients for having successfully completed their missions in Afghanistan and Timor Leste, and done Singapore and the SAF proud.
Among the recipients were 37 personnel who had been deployed to Afghanistan as part of Singapore's contribution to the multinational stabilisation and reconstruction efforts there. These included 22 members of a Weapon Locating Radar (WLR) team deployed in Tarin Kowt, Uruzgan from January to June this year to provide early warning of rocket attacks for the personnel deployed at the base. It also included an eight-man surgical team, consisting of three Operationally Ready National Servicemen, which was deployed to a field hospital in the same base in Tarin Kowt. Also receiving the medals were a five-man National Command Element that was deployed to Afghanistan for the first time to provide command and control for SAF troops, as well as two other servicemen who served in the National Support Element to provide logistics and liaison support for SAF deployments in Afghanistan. The other medal recipients included two officers deployed to Timor-Leste as part of the United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste from Sep 2009 to Sep 2010.
