Fact Sheet: Enhancing the SAF's Counter-Terrorism Capabilities

Background

The threat from terrorism will persist for the next few decades, especially in Southeast Asia as foreign fighters from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) return to the region. Since 2014, the SAF has been part of the Defeat-ISIS coalition, with the most recent deployment in 2018 involving the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Counter-Terrorism Training Unit.

Next Gen Counter-Terrorism Operations 

The SAF must continue to evolve to face the ever-changing and increasing terror threat. The SAF's Next Gen SAF Counter-Terrorism (CT) operations will leverage technology such as robotics, unmanned systems, artificial intelligence and data analytics. This will enable the CT operations to be faster, leaner and more lethal, with the aim to achieve systemic overmatch against perpetrators and respond more effectively in a shorter period of time. 

The SAF's Special Operations Command Centre

Located in Hendon Camp, the SAF's new Special Operations Command Centre (SOCC), will plan and coordinate the Next Gen SAF's CT operations. 

Commissioned by the end of 2019, the SOCC will be the main command centre to centrally plan, monitor and manage multiple CT and contingency operations. The centre will be equipped with enhanced Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) systems to support operational planning, coordination and to provide situational awareness for backend sense-making. When required, the SOCC will work closely with relevant agencies in managing incidents.
