Background
Advances in smart technology have opened up new possibilities to improve experience and productivity. The Singapore Army is embracing smart technology to enhance the way the Army operates and interacts with its servicemen. Working closely with the Army's Full-time National Servicemen and engineers from the Defence Science and Technology Agency, suitable smart technologies are going to be introduced and trialled in the Army’s camps to (i) enhance National Service experiences; and (ii) improve operating efficiency.
Application of Smart Technologies
Suitable smart technologies will be trialled in selected camps and will cover the following domains:
a) Camp Companion Mobile Application. The Camp Companion mobile application will allow servicemen to have access to camp, unit and training information on the move. These include alerts, unit routine orders, parade state, training programme and medical status. The application will also come with a digital identification feature and will allow servicemen to indent their meal, reserve camp facilities and report incidents.
b) Smart Cookhouse. New serving concepts and a wider range of food choices will be explored to reduce queue time and enhance servicemen's dining experiences. The Army is also exploring ready pre-packed meals delivered via automated dispensers for servicemen.
c) Smart Store and Smart Armskote. The Army is exploring ways to reduce manning requirements at stores, and allow servicemen to draw and return equipment at their own convenience. The Army is also looking into smart tracking technology to account for weapons.
d) Smart Workshop. A software based diagnostic assistant will be incorporated with a digital manual to aid technicians in fault diagnostics. The Army is also exploring autonomous systems and augmented reality devices to assist technicians in their work areas.
Implementation
The Smart Camp initiatives aim to improve operating efficiency and enhance servicemen's experience by introducing suitable smart technologies into their daily routines. These new initiatives will be progressively trialled at selected camps from end 2018 onwards.
