The Chief of the German Army, Lieutenant General (LTG) Alfons Mais, was conferred Singapore's prestigious military award, the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) or Meritorious Service Medal (Military) [MSM(M)], by President Halimah Yacob. Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen presented the award to LTG Mais at an investiture held at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) this afternoon.
LTG Mais was conferred the award in recognition of his significant contributions in strengthening bilateral defence ties between the German Army and the Singapore Army. As both countries transited out of the pandemic, LTG Mais' strong support for the Singapore Army's training in Germany facilitated the resumption of Exercise Panzer Strike in 2022, an armour training and live-firing exercise conducted by the Singapore Army. The exercise provides Singapore Army servicemen with invaluable training opportunities to hone their skills, which contributes to the operational readiness and professional development of the Singapore Army.
Under LTG Mais' leadership, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) continues to enjoy Germany's support for the SAF's training in Germany. LTG Mais also promoted the close cooperation between both Armies through a wide spectrum of interactions, including joint training, professional exchanges and cross-attendance of courses. These frequent exchanges have strengthened the mutual understanding, rapport and friendship between both Armies.
LTG Mais is in Singapore from 27 to 30 July 2023 for his introductory visit. Prior to the investiture, he called on Dr Ng, Chief of Defence Force Vice Admiral Aaron Beng and Chief of Army Major-General David Neo, earlier today after inspecting the Guard of Honour at MINDEF. As part of his programme, LTG Mais will be hosted to a visit to the Multi-Mission Range Complex and Headquarters Armour tomorrow.
