Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen delivering his speech at the Overseas Service Medal award presentation ceremony today.
Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen presented the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Overseas Service Medal (OSM) to 64 personnel at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Defence this afternoon. The medals were awarded in recognition of their contributions to the multinational coalition to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in the Middle East.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Dr Ng commended the SAF personnel for their dedication, professionalism and commitment, and for accomplishing the mission with high standards. He cited examples of how the deployed SAF troops were making a difference, and shared that their contributions and outstanding work were appreciated and praised by coalition partners. Dr Ng also shared that the SAF Counter-Terrorism Training Unit (CTTU) will be deployed to Iraq later this year to help train the Iraqi Security Forces.
Since 2014, in support of the multinational coalition to defeat ISIS, the SAF has deployed Imagery Analysis Teams, Intelligence Fusion Officers, Medical Teams and a Republic of Singapore Air Force KC-135R Tanker to support the coalition forces.
To guard against terrorist attacks in this region, Dr Ng shared that counter-terrorism cooperation will take top priority for Singapore as the 2018 ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) Chair. He added that Singapore will be hosting a counter-terrorism symposium in October, and is working to build a network of experts to counter chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) threats via the ADMM framework.
Singapore is firmly committed to the global fight against terror, and the SAF will continue to do what is within our means to combat it, near and far, in order to keep Singapore and Singaporeans safe.
