MINDEF-DSTA Joint Reply to Janes’ Media Query on SAF’s Cloud Capabilities

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) works closely with the Defence Technology Community, including the Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA), to design, develop and integrate technology capabilities, including cloud capabilities, to ensure a seamless integration of advanced technology in the SAF’s operations and capabilities.

The joint Command and Control Information System (CCIS) is a system developed by the SAF and DSTA to realise the SAF’s vision of a smart command post. The joint CCIS enables the SAF to optimise its suite of sensors and shooters, and facilitates their effective employment across multiple domains. It leverages technologies such as data analytics and weapon-to-target matching algorithms, to generate warfighting solutions and allow commanders to make informed and prompt decisions. The joint CCIS is integrated with other systems, such as the Next Generation Army CCIS to share video feeds, telemetry and target information. In addition to smart features and algorithms that automate complex and manpower-intensive tasks, the Next Generation Army CCIS leverages cloud technology to enhance collaboration and information sharing, with a suite of cybersecurity solutions to protect the network from threats. The SAF and DSTA have adopted an agile and rapid development approach to deploy these systems. This will enable the SAF to keep up with the rapidly changing warfighting landscape and technology through continuous upgrades to ensure the systems’ relevance and usefulness for years to come.

Moving forward, there are plans to enhance our warfighting systems towards exploiting the full capability of the cloud.

Additionally, since 2022, the Digital and Intelligence Service (DIS) has partnered DSTA to pilot a dedicated cloud, where classified information and workloads reside. To ensure that MINDEF/SAF keeps abreast of best-in-class cloud technologies, the DIS and DSTA are exploring collaborations with leading Cloud Service Providers to adopt on-premises solutions that can support MINDEF/SAF's requirements.
