Reply to Zaobao Forum Letter on "Over Dependence on Artificial Intelligence"

We thank Mr Cai Wei Qian (translated name) for his letter titled “Over Dependence on Artificial Intelligence (AI)”, 17 January 2019.

The Electronic Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) Scoring System (ELISS) introduced 15 years ago using motion sensors placed at various points has ensured an objective and accurate assessment for IPPTs. Since its introduction, more than 100,000 IPPTs have been conducted annually using ELISS to validate its dependability. Results of IPPT can be compiled very quickly and accurately, for awards to be given to successful performers promptly. With MINDEF’s pilot of PayNow for IPPT Incentive Awards in early 2019, Operationally Ready National Servicemen participating in the pilot will be able to receive their award immediately after completing their IPPT.

ELISS provides a fair and objective assessment of IPPT for all servicemen. While participants are executing their push-ups and sit-ups, ELISS provides feedback and voice cues to guide participants to complete a successful movement. Fitness trainers are also on-site to provide coaching to participants after continuous no-counts. In the event of an appeal, the trainers and the participant can collectively review the result through a video playback. The fitness trainers and commanders are also available to address concerns from our national servicemen.

For servicemen with medical conditions that make it more difficult or are unable to complete IPPT, the SAF works with our medical boards to decide if exemptions should be provided.
