Exercise Wallaby is the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) largest overseas exercise. This year’s exercise is conducted from 24 September to 7 November 2019, and involves about 3,000 personnel and 300 platforms from the Singapore Army and the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). This year marks the 29th anniversary of Exercise Wallaby, which was inaugurated in 1990.
Exercise Wallaby is held at the Shoalwater Bay Training Area (SWBTA) in Queensland, Australia. The training area is about four times the size of Singapore, and allows the SAF to conduct large-scale complex training to hone its operational competencies. Under the Singapore-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the SAF will look forward to enhanced and expanded access to training areas, including SWBTA, over a period of 25 years.
This year's Exercise Wallaby comprises two training frames:
Frame 1: 27 September to 14 October 2019. Frame 1 comprised a unilateral training exercise involving Headquarters 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade and 1st Battalion Singapore Guards (1 Gds) from the Singapore Army; and the Helicopter Group, Transport Group, Divisional Air Defence Group and Tactical Air Support Group from the RSAF. 1 Gds completed their Army Training Evaluation Centre (ATEC) evaluation as part of Frame 1, supported by the RSAF's close air support missions, underslung and troop-lift operations.
Frame 2: 15 October to 3 November 2019. Frame 2 is a unilateral training exercise involving Headquarters 8th Singapore Armoured Brigade, 41st Battalion Singapore Armoured Regiment and 3rd SAF Transport Battalion from the Singapore Army; and the Helicopter Group, Transport Group and Divisional Air Defence Group from the RSAF. The exercise involves an Armour training component with the Bionix Infantry Fighting Vehicles and air-land integrated training involving C-130 airdrop operations. The integrated training allows the Army and the RSAF to work hand-in-hand to enhance interoperability and hone the operational competencies of personnel from both Services.
