Update on the SAF's COVID-19 Vaccination Management

In June 2021, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) commenced COVID-19 vaccination for pre-enlistees before their enlistment into National Service to better protect them against the COVID-19 infection risk. Two batches of pre-enlistees had since received the first COVID-19 vaccine dose prior to enlistment, with the second dose administered shortly upon enlistment. Beginning with those enlisting in September 2021, pre-enlistees will be fully vaccinated with both COVID-19 vaccine doses before enlistment. This will provide earlier protection for them and accord better assurance and peace of mind for their families.

Overall, the SAF has administered more than 100,000 vaccine doses. 92% of SAF personnel have been fully vaccinated with both doses. Of these, there were four reported active servicemen who experienced serious adverse events – one reported case of myocarditis, two reported cases of anaphylaxis, and one reported case of Bell’s palsy. All four personnel had received prompt medical attention; two among them were warded in the hospitals for observation and had since been discharged. All four cases are currently well, and the SAF continues to actively manage their activities and monitor their health. Relevant information have also been provided to the Health Sciences Authority as part of the national vaccine-related adverse event reporting requirements.
