Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen hosted the United States (US) Secretary of the Navy Raymond Mabus to lunch this afternoon. During their meeting, Dr Ng and Secretary Mabus affirmed the excellent and long-standing defence ties between Singapore and the US. They also discussed the importance of freedom of navigation and overflight, and the US' continued leadership and presence in the Asia-Pacific as a force for regional peace and stability.
Secretary Mabus' visit also showcases the strong partnership between the Republic of Singapore Navy and the US Navy. Both navies interact extensively through bilateral and multilateral exercises, including the annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise, as well as other regular professional exchanges. These interactions strengthen the interoperability and cooperation between the two navies and bolster mutual understanding and strong friendships between their personnel.
Secretary Mabus, who is in Singapore from 9 to 11 May 2016, will also meet Permanent Secretary (Defence) Mr Chan Yeng Kit and Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Lai Chung Han during his visit.
