In response to media queries on Sheik Ferdous bin Sheik Alau'ddin's request for deferment from full-time National Service, the following MINDEF statement was issued:
“MINDEF has granted deferments to exceptional sportsmen from full-time National Service (NS) if they are assessed to have the ability to win international medals for Singapore, such as the Olympics or other equivalent sporting events. These assessments are conducted with Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) and take into account previous achievements and current performance of the applicant. Based on these existing criteria, Sheik Ferdous bin Sheik Alau'ddin's request to be deferred from full-time NS was not supported."
