Second Minister for Defence Visits NSmen at Jurong Island

Second Minister for Defence Mr Chan Chun Sing visited Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen) from the 807th Battalion, Singapore Infantry Regiment (807 SIR), at Jurong Island this morning. He was accompanied by Chief of Staff, General Staff Brigadier-General Lim Hock Yu and other senior SAF officers.

During his visit, Mr Chan interacted with the NSmen who were deployed to protect key installations on Jurong Island. Speaking after the visit, Mr Chan reiterated the importance of the SAF's role in remaining strong and vigilant against security threats such as terrorism. He said, "In recent times especially, the security situation has been volatile in different parts of the world. We must not let our guard down in Singapore, especially for vital installations like Jurong Island. We will continue to make sure that we maintain our vigilance and readiness." Mr Chan also lauded the role of NSmen in such operations, and that National Service remains a cornerstone of the SAF. He added that the SAF will continue to work closely with the Home Team agencies to protect Singapore against any threats.

Commanding Officer of 807 SIR, MAJ (NS) Edmund Yeo added, "The deployment is very meaningful, where NSmen get to be deployed and play a part in defending the nation. In current circumstances, it's very real and the men are committed to performing their duties diligently and professionally." The SAF has been conducting security operations at key installations such as Changi Airport, Jurong Island and Sembawang Wharves since 2001.
