President Tony Tan Keng Yam reviewed a commissioning parade at the SAFTI Military Institute this evening, where 503 officer cadets were commissioned as officers of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). This cohort of graduands includes 407 Army, 41 Air Force and 55 Navy officer cadets. The parade marked the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the Officer Cadet School. The challenging and realistic training conducted during the course tested and honed the officer cadets' combat, planning and leadership skills. The newly commissioned officers will go on to assume command, instructional or staff appointments in the SAF.
Speaking at the parade, President Tan highlighted that a strong defence has played a critical role in ensuring Singapore's steady progress since independence, and a strong and credible SAF has helped deter potential aggression and given us the confidence to steer a steady course in an uncertain world. He said, "The SAF has expanded its capabilities to ensure that it continues to be ready to defend Singapore in the face of widening security challenges. The SAF today is capable of conducting a full spectrum of operations to handle conventional and non-conventional threats." During his speech, President Tan also spoke to the graduands on the importance of leadership. He said, "Lead by example and demonstrate your own deep sense of purpose and mission in serving National Service. Strive for excellence, and uphold the highest standards of discipline and professionalism. Train your people hard but always have their safety and well-being at heart. Only then will you be able to earn their respect and trust."Also present at the parade were Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, Members of Parliament, senior Ministry of Defence officials and SAF officers, as well as families and friends of the newly commissioned officers.
