Minister for National Development Mr Khaw Boon Wan reviewed a commissioning parade at the SAFTI Military Institute this evening, where 279 Army and 28 Air Force officer cadets were commissioned as officers of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
Addressing the graduands at the parade, Mr Khaw highlighted the important role that the SAF officers undertake in leading and inspiring a sense of commitment to National Service (NS) in their men. He said, "Be their guide, be their friend and be their mentor. Take time to listen to their concerns and challenges… Instil in them the belief that they can play a part in defending our home and our way of life." Mr Khaw also noted in his speech that the SAF has not only sharpened its fighting edge over the years by leveraging new technologies and warfighting concepts, but has also made meaningful contributions to international security through peace support operations such as deployments to Afghanistan. Commending the servicemen and women who had demonstrated their commitment and professionalism, he said, "The strength of the SAF lies in its people, without which there will be no strong SAF."
The parade marked the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the Officer Cadet School, which honed the officer cadets' combat, planning and leadership skills. The newly commissioned officers will go on to assume command, instructional or staff appointments in the SAF.
Also present at the parade were Members of Parliament, senior SAF officers and Ministry of Defence officials, as well as families and friends of the graduands.
