Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen presented the Defence Technology Prize (DTP) to one individual and five teams at the 25th DTP award ceremony held at the Fusionopolis Genexis Theatre this afternoon.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Ng noted the DTP's history and paid tribute to the defence engineers and scientists who have made vital contributions to enhancing the operational capabilities of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). He said, "We employ advanced technologies, many of which are state-of-the-art, because we have over the years invested in building up and sustaining our defence scientists and engineers." Dr Ng also highlighted the need for the defence technology community to be aware of the SAF's operational challenges to maintain its technological edge. "So that's why we pooled our military and technology experts together to form the Future Systems & Technology Directorate - this was done in July this year - so that (the defence technology community) can understand the military thinking; the military planners can understand the defence and technology capabilities," he added.
Established in 1989, the DTP is awarded annually to individuals and teams that have made significant technological contributions to the defence capability of Singapore. The Prize also serves to foster technological innovation and encourage breakthroughs in defence science and technology.
