Satellite Communications (SATCOM) technology provides the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) with a means of communication that is highly reliable and unlimited in range. It utilises the coverage provided by satellite transponders to enable communications between ground stations where the SATCOM system is deployed. The SATCOM system was previously used in SAF operations such as the support of multinational stabilisation and reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. It has been upgraded and customised to the Ku-Band SATCOM system, which has a higher bandwidth for data transmission and is more easily deployed. This system can be used during local training, for the coordination and administration of overseas exercises, as well as Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and Peace Support Operations.
