Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs inspecting the officer cadet contingents at the 89th Officer Cadet Course commissioning parade held at SAFTI Military Institute.
Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs Mr Teo Chee Hean reviewed a commissioning parade at the SAFTI Military Institute this evening, where 542 officer cadets were commissioned as officers of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). This cohort of graduands comprises 441 Army, 55 Air Force and 46 Navy officer cadets.
Speaking at the parade, Mr Teo emphasised the important role that the SAF officers play as commanders in developing a sense of mission in their men and women. "Lead by example and demonstrate a strong sense of conviction in whatever you do… Help them to adjust to life in National Service, and to take personal ownership over national defence," he said. During his speech, Mr Teo highlighted that the SAF has broadened and deepened its capabilities over the years not only to deter aggression and ensure that it could defeat aggressors, but also to meet wide-ranging security challenges. Citing examples of the SAF's involvement in international peace support missions and disaster relief operations, he said: "This demonstrates the competence, commitment and capabilities of the servicemen and the SAF, as well as Singapore’s commitment to contribute to a more secure and safer world."
The parade marked the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the Officer Cadet School. The realistic training conducted during the course sharpened the officer cadets' combat, planning and leadership skills. The newly commissioned officers will move on to assume command, instructional or staff appointments in the SAF.
Also present at the parade were Members of Parliament, senior Ministry of Defence officials and SAF officers, as well as families and friends of the newly commissioned officers.
