The Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI), Admiral (ADM) Agus Suhartono, called on Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen at the Ministry of Defence this afternoon. ADM Suhartono, who is in Singapore for a farewell visit from 19 to 20 Aug 2013, had earlier called on Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Ng Chee Meng after inspecting a Guard of Honour.
The visit by ADM Suhartono, the first amongst his farewell visits, underscores the excellent and long-standing ties between the Singapore and Indonesian armed forces. Under ADM Suhartono's leadership, professional interactions between the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the TNI have grown in scope and complexity. In recognition of his significant role in strengthening ties between the SAF and TNI, ADM Suhartono was conferred Singapore's highest military award, the Darjah Utama Bakti Cemerlang (Tentera) [Distinguished Service Order (Military)], by President Tony Tan Keng Yam in May 2012.
Both militaries regularly engage in bilateral exercises, such as Exercise Safkar Indopura, Exercise Eagle and Exercise Elang Indopura, as well as professional exchanges and cross-attendance of courses. These regular interactions have served to enhance the professionalism, close ties and mutual understanding between the two armed forces.
