Measures in place to recognise contributions of National Servicemen
We thank Mr Christopher Ong for his forum letter "Lasting ways to help NSmen" 3 Nov 2012 and his feedback regarding recognising the contributions of National Servicemen.
Over the years, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) has put in place various measures to show our appreciation for the contributions of our National Servicemen, including initiatives that support their career and educational aspirations. Examples include the e-PREP initiative, consisting of a variety of online courses by approved local institutions of higher learning and e-learning providers that prepare full-time National Servicemen for the workforce or for further studies. There is also the SAFRA Education Scheme which has been in place since 1994. Under this scheme, SAFRA members can apply for full sponsorship, or highly preferential rates for degree and diploma courses at established private education centres and institutions.
MINDEF recognises our NSmen in other tangible ways such as the annual NSman Tax Relief, the National Service Bonus, and additional allotments of the GST Offset Credit and Growth Dividends. We also recognise the contributions of National Servicemen at key milestones in their NS journey with the National Service Recognition Award.
We are heartened by Mr Christopher Ong's strong support for National Service, and will continue to look for meaningful ways to recognise National Servicemen for their dedicated service.
