Fact Sheet: Maritime Information-Sharing Exercise and 4th Western Pacific Maritime Security Exercise

The Maritime Information-Sharing Exercise (MARISX) 2011 is a scenario-driven shore-based exercise to validate linkages among participating operation centres and to practice the information-sharing processes among regional navies. MARISX 2011 will take place at the Multinational Operations and Exercises Centre located in Changi Command and Control Centre of Changi Naval Base from 18 to 20 May 2011. The exercise is the third in the series and is organised by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and held in conjunction with IMDEX Asia 2011.

The exercise scenario for MARISX 2011 will allow exercise participants to practice information-sharing and sense-making, by using an information-sharing portal designed for MARISX. Seemingly unrelated information will be shared and participants will have to piece the information together to uncover a terrorist plot involving a series of multiple attacks from the sea.

A total of 54 International Liaison Officers and 34 operations centres across 27 countries will be participating in MARISX 2011. They are:

a. Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS) countries such as Australia,Bangladesh, Brunei, Canada, Chile, France, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, People’s Republic of China, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam;

b. Non-WPNS countries such as Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Italy,Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom;

4th Western Pacific Maritime Security Exercise

The 4th Western Pacific Maritime Security Exercise (WMSX) is organised by the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and is held in conjunction with IMDEX Asia 2011. The WMSX will consist of the Naval Tactical Trainer (NTT) Exercise and the Boarding Exercise.

In the NTT Exercise, the command teams of participating ships will be tasked to respond to a spectrum of maritime security operations in a simulated environment with realistic scenarios. The NTT Exercise aims to strengthen interoperability among participating nations through joint operations planning as well as foster mutual understanding among participants. Ships will be grouped into Task Groups to plan and execute scenarios from MARISX.

In the Boarding Exercise, participating nations will perform compliant boarding.Participants will be using a simulated boarding trainer as well as execute live boarding of a vessel out at sea. Through professional exchanges, participants will also share operational experiences and gain knowledge of boarding operations. The Boarding Exercise aims to enhance mutual understanding, coordination and integration of participating nations' procedures through the various compliant boarding scenarios.
