SAF to use tablet computers for cost effective training
The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) would like to clarify that tablet computers are used only in training institutes to enhance the serviceman’s learning experience. Learning on tablet computers does not replace physical, “out-in-the-field” training. In fact, there will be more time for physical and practical training because our servicemen can now acquire theoretical knowledge and skills at their own pace with the use of tablet computers. By consistently adopting IT technology to improve teaching methods, the training of our servicemen has also become more cost effective.
Since 2009, SAF servicemen at the Basic Military Training Centre, Specialist Cadet School and Officer Cadet School have been using laptops to carry out self-directed learning, for subjects such as weapon handling, individual field craft, first aid and training safety. Tablet computers, which are less costly and more mobile, will replace laptops and will be introduced to the other training institutes. The SAF is acquiring off-the-shelf tablet computers instead of building a customised product because this is more cost effective.
