40 years ago on this day, the SAF flag was unfurled for the first time at the inaugural SAF Day. SAF Day was, and continues to be, a time where we reaffirm our pledge of loyalty and dedication to the SAF and the nation. It is also a time to reflect on the role and responsibility of the SAF.The SAF is the ultimate guarantor of the peace, security and prosperity that Singapore enjoys. A highly effective and operationally-ready SAF provides the means of deterrence to safeguard Singapore's sovereignty and strategic interests.Today's security challenges are complex and trans-national, and the men and women of the SAF undertake an expanded spectrum of operations at home and abroad. In defending the homeland and protecting key installations, the SAF lays down a safe and secure foundation for our nation to prosper. Over the past year, the SAF has continued to demonstrate Singapore's commitment as a responsible member of the international community, participating in international security and reconstruction missions, such as in the Gulf of Aden and Afghanistan, and assisting in disaster relief operations.SAF Day commemorates and recognises our men and women in uniform - regulars and national servicemen - who carry out the mission of the SAF with excellence, professionalism and fighting spirit. As the SAF transforms into the 3rd Generation SAF, every soldier, sailor and airmen is taking on bigger roles and new responsibilities. Your deep commitment to Singapore and the SAF underpins the success of this transformation journey and reinforces the SAF's ability to meet all our mission objectives. The SAF is grateful for the support that Singaporeans have given to national service. Families and employers have made sacrifices that have enabled our national servicemen to carry out their duties. Singaporeans understand the importance of building a strong SAF capable of defending our country, and we appreciate this support. During difficult economic times, this support is even more important. This spirit of unity and solidarity will enable us to overcome any difficulties and come out stronger. To all the men and women of the SAF, you have served Singapore well and with tireless dedication. On this SAF Day, I thank you once again for your loyalty and deep commitment to Singapore.
