Minister of State for Defence Visits RSAF Personnel at the Advanced Jet Training Detachment in France

Minister of State for Defence Mr Desmond Choo visited the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF)'s Advanced Jet Training Detachment, 150 Squadron, at Cazaux Air Base, France, last evening (SG time). Mr Choo and Vice-President of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and the Armed Forces Mr Philippe Paul were Guests-of-Honour for the Singapore-France 60th anniversary celebrations at Cazaux Air Base. During the visit, they witnessed the unveiling of a commemorative Singapore-France 60th anniversary logo on the RSAF’s M-346 aircraft and French Air and Space Force (FASF)’s Alpha Jet, as well as a combined flypast by both aircraft. The event was also witnessed by senior officials from the RSAF and FASF.

Mr Choo highlighted the significance of the RSAF’s training detachment at Cazaux Air Base and expressed appreciation to France for its strong and longstanding support since 1998. He said, “France was among the first to recognise Singapore’s independence in 1965. Since then, our two countries have cultivated a broad-based, and forward-looking partnership—encompassing high-level state visits and regular ministerial dialogues, trade, research collaborations, cultural exchanges, and of course, a strong defence partnership. Since 1998–when the first RSAF Super Skyhawk flew over French skies—Cazaux has been our home away from home. In 2012, we transitioned to the M-346 Advanced Jet Trainer, and today, it remains where our fighter aircrew learn the art and science of air combat. In 27 years, we’ve flown over 31,000 hours and trained more than 330 fighter pilots and Weapon Systems Officers.”

The Cazaux Air Base in France is home to the RSAF’s 150 Squadron and generations of personnel, including instructor pilots, Air Force Engineers, fighter aircrew trainees, support staff and their families. Such overseas training and detachments allow the RSAF to overcome the land and airspace constraints of Singapore. Both the RSAF and FASF also interact regularly through visits, professional exchanges and courses. These interactions have contributed significantly towards the excellent and long-standing defence relations between the two countries, and strengthened the mutual understanding and camaraderie amongst the personnel of both Air Forces.
