Graduands of the 52/2022 Specialist Cadet Course,
Parents and loved ones of our Graduands,
Men and women of the Singapore Armed Forces,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Introduction
Good evening. My heartiest congratulations to all graduands on your successful completion of the Specialist Cadet Course. It is my pleasure today to join your loved ones here at the Leader's Square to mark this joyous and significant occasion. You have come a long way in the past 22 weeks of rigorous and demanding training. Your hard work and perseverance have paid off, as you now join the ranks of leadership of men and women of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
The Need for a Strong and Credible SAF
The world we live in today is increasingly complex and uncertain. Even as Singapore and the world come through the COVID-19 pandemic, we are seeing dark clouds gathering in the horizon. US-China tensions are worsening; climate change is not abating, terrorism and cyber-attacks are continuing to disrupt lives all around the world. The gloomy economic outlook, supply chain disruptions, rising inflation are affecting lives and livelihoods. Having dealt with COVID-19 as one people, we must now focus our attention on dealing with these challenges.
The on-going Russia-Ukraine conflict has profound impact on the world and Singapore. It demonstrated how a country's sovereignty and territorial integrity can easily be undermined, and how international law and diplomatic agreements can be violated without regard. The conflict is a stern reminder that small countries like Singapore, cannot rely on others to defend ourselves. This is why we need a strong SAF, capable and ready to defend our island and protect our people. As future leaders, you are now entrusted with the responsibility to inspire those under your charge to carry out this task and to train them well.
Generations of Strength
This year, we commemorate 55 years of National Service. Since 1967, more than one million of national servicemen and women have stepped forward to serve our nation. Their contributions and sacrifices have kept Singapore safe, and provided strength to Singaporeans, especially in times of crisis. I know many of the fathers, brothers and loved ones seated here today have also done your part for National Service. We cannot thank you enough. For me, the best way to show our gratitude is for each generation to continue to uphold this mission – protect the sovereignty and security of Singapore. To all the families and loved ones here today, thank you for your strong support and encouragement that has kept our graduands through this demanding course. Your steady support for national service is vital to sustain our collective commitment to defence and to national service. So thank you.
Graduands, I welcome all of you to join the ranks of Specialists and Military Experts of the SAF. You have demonstrated your ability and proven yourselves worthy to lead. Moving ahead, all of you are going to lead the men and women in various roles and units. The Specialists and Military Experts are to me, the sharp edge of the SAF leadership. You have the most direct influence on the people you lead. For many soldiers, you are the first person they will look up to, who will teach them everything they need to learn about their military service. So lead your men and women well now, look after them and help them grow to become leaders like yourselves. The difference you make in their lives will be the most fulfilling part of your leadership journey. I have every confidence that you will discharge your duties to the best of your abilities. I also want to say a word of thanks to all the trainers, thank you for your hard work and dedication to nurture every generation of military leaders for Singapore.
Conclusion
Last week, Singapore celebrated our 57th year of independence. The theme "Stronger Together, Majulah" reminds us that trust and togetherness are what made us stronger to deal with challenges. It calls for all Singaporeans to unite and strive for a better future. No matter how daunting the road ahead will be, we will be able to overcome all challenges as long as we stay as one united people. Once again, congratulations to all our graduands. I wish you a rewarding leadership journey ahead.
With Pride We Lead! Thank you.
