Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen spoke at the 15th Munich Young Leaders (MYL) Roundtable on the topic "A Changing Political Landscape". Held on the side-lines of the 60th Munich Security Conference (MSC)[1], the MYL Roundtable brings together young leaders from governments, think-tanks and the private sector from Asia-Pacific, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the United States to discuss issues related to foreign and security policy.
At the session, Dr Ng interacted with 19 young and upcoming leaders from 18 countries. He spoke about inheriting a troubled world due to the retreat of globalisation and multilateralism; a changing political landscape; and a loss of faith in governments. He said, "You inherit a much-troubled world… This is the lowest ebb in my memory, and for me that is saying a lot. This is the worst of times, and I am not sure if there will be the best of times." Dr Ng also exchanged views with participants on the current political landscape and ways to realistically address the existing global challenges.
Dr Ng is in Munich on a three-day visit to attend the 60th MSC from 16 to 18 February 2024 (Singapore Time).
[1] Held annually in Germany since 1963, the MSC is a high-level security conference that brings together key foreign affairs and defence leaders from around the world. This will be the twelfth time that Dr Ng is attending the MSC.
