The SAF Adjusts Activities According to Haze Situation

The health and safety of Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) servicemen are of paramount importance. To ensure that servicemen train and operate safely, the SAF monitors the air quality in Singapore closely, and has in place a set of Pollutant Standards Index (PSI)-Activity Guidelines to adjust our outdoor activities and training according to the haze situation. The PSI-Activity Guidelines are formulated for the SAF population and take into account servicemen's medical fitness and the nature of activities. These guidelines are consistent with the National Environment Agency's health advisories. For 24-hour PSI reading below 100, activities will continue as per normal. With the 24-hour PSI reading exceeding 100, the SAF will adjust physical and outdoor activities accordingly to limit servicemen's exposure to the haze.

In spite of the PSI-Activity Guidelines, the SAF stands ready to safeguard Singapore's peace and security, and the SAF training has largely continued. The SAF will also issue N95 masks to servicemen performing essential outdoor duties when the 24-hour PSI reading exceeds the "Very Unhealthy" range.

While the Indonesian authorities accepted our offer of assistance initially, they have since expressed appreciation for the offer, and said they have sufficient resources of their own for now. MINDEF/SAF remains in close contact with the Indonesian authorities and the SAF stands ready to support and assist Indonesia when activated.
