Written Reply by Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing on Adjusting Procurement of Key Platforms to Ensure SAF’s Readiness and Agility
14 October 2025
Mr Lee Hong Chuang asked the Coordinating Minister for Public Services and Minister for Defence in view of shifting global security landscape and rising use of unmanned systems (a) how is the Ministry adjusting its procurement of key platforms in ensuring SAF's readiness and agility; (b) what training and support are provided to equip servicemen, especially NSFs, for such advanced technologies; (c) how is increased FY2025 defence spending balanced with fiscal sustainability, operational needs and international defence commitments.
Minister for Defence, Mr Chan Chun Sing:
MINDEF and the SAF continually monitor the changing nature of security threats and warfare. We also scan the horizon to identify and assess new and emerging technologies that can complement the SAF’s existing capabilities.
Unmanned systems is one example. The SAF has operated drones since the late 1980s, starting with the Scout Remotely Piloted Vehicle. As unmanned technologies progressed, the SAF acquired and introduced other unmanned systems and operational concepts, and provided relevant training to its personnel, including Full-Time and Operationally Ready National Servicemen.
More SAF units and personnel will be equipped with and trained in unmanned systems and other emerging technologies in the years ahead. MINDEF and the SAF will continue to invest the defence budget prudently and consistently to build up our capabilities in a systematic and sustainable manner.
