Fact Sheet: Launch of Singapore Defence Volunteer Network (SG Defence)
12 May 2026
The Singapore Defence Volunteer Network (SG Defence) brings together volunteers from all walks of life under a shared commitment to Singapore's defence. By consolidating volunteers from MINDEF, the SAF, and related organisations under a common identity, SG Defence will strengthen our defence volunteer ecosystem.
MINDEF has put together 10 civilian volunteer schemes under SG Defence, creating capacity for nearly 400 new volunteers and opening up more opportunities for men and women — Singaporeans, new citizens, Permanent Residents, and other residents of Singapore — to contribute to the nation's defence. The SAF Volunteer Corps will also be part of SG Defence, and together with these civilian schemes, they establish new pathways for meaningful participation in our collective defence efforts. Today, there are approximately 1,500 military and civilian volunteers contributing to Singapore's defence. SG Defence aims to double this number in the next 3 to 5 years.
SG Defence – Involving the Whole-of-Society for Defence
In today’s increasingly complex security environment, Singapore faces evolving threats that require a whole-of-society response. Total Defence is Singapore's overarching framework for national resilience, encompassing Military, Civil, Economic, Social, Digital, and Psychological Defence. SG Defence focuses on volunteering in direct support of Military Defence and National Service. Through SG Defence, we are creating more ways for volunteers to complement the efforts of our National Servicemen because defending Singapore is a shared responsibility that extends beyond those who serve NS.
Establishment of Engagement and Volunteer Office (EVO)
SG Defence is coordinated by the Engagement and Volunteer Office (EVO) within Nexus, MINDEF. Working closely with the SAF Volunteer Affairs Department (SVAD) and SAF Volunteer Corps (SAFVC), EVO will facilitate transitions between different volunteer roles as individuals progress through different life stages and create synergies across military and civilian volunteer programmes.
Diverse Opportunities for Volunteering in SG Defence
SG Defence offers diverse opportunities designed to match different interests, skills, and availability. Individuals who are passionate about different fields such as education, heritage preservation, creative design, or direct military support, can find meaningful ways to contribute to our defence. Here are some of the volunteer schemes available:
SAF Volunteer Corps (SAFVC). Volunteers who join the SAFVC will contribute directly to Singapore's peace and security alongside the men and women of the SAF, in military operations and support roles. They serve in support of the SAF's mission to enhance Singapore's peace and security through deterrence and diplomacy, playing a direct and impactful role in safeguarding our nation’s security and way of life.
SAFRA Volunteers. These volunteers will play a vital role in fostering a strong sense of community and supporting NSmen and their families through various avenues. Committing their time, passion and expertise, these volunteers contribute towards the development and management of SAFRA clubhouses, defence engagement activities, interest groups and a wide range of meaningful programmes, to strengthen bonds and appreciate NSmen.
National Service Gallery (NSG) Creative Designer. Volunteers will bring their creative perspectives and design expertise to support the gallery in developing visual materials that shape its direction and presentation, playing a meaningful role in presenting Singapore’s National Service story to diverse audiences.
Defence Collective Singapore (DCS) Volunteers. Volunteers play a vital role in strengthening public understanding and appreciation of Singapore’s defence story through three key contributions. As volunteer guides at the Singapore Discovery Centre, Singapore Navy Museum, Singapore Air Force Museum and Singapore Army Museum, they bring history and capabilities to life through purposeful storytelling, sharing the milestones and moments that shape Singapore’s defence journey. They also support a wide range of events and programmes across outreach platforms and national celebrations, enabling meaningful engagement with visitors on the ground. Beyond this, volunteers also share their knowledge and experience in more specialised ways, helping to enrich programmes and strengthen public appreciation of defence.
National Education (NE) Ambassadors. Volunteers who serve as NE Ambassadors will share defence insights with diverse audiences across schools, community groups, and organisations, helping them make sense of complex issues, our defence challenges, and encouraging support Singapore’s national security.
SG Defence is about ensuring that Singaporeans, new citizens, Permanent Residents, and residents of Singapore – regardless of background, age, or experience – can find a meaningful way to contribute to our nation's defence. Whether you serve in uniform, share your expertise, or advocate for national resilience in your community, your contribution matters.
