Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen spoke at the seventh plenary of the 19th Shangri-La Dialogue (SLD) today, on the topic "New Ideas for Securing Regional Stability", alongside Canadian Minister of National Defence Anita Anand and Fiji Minister for Defence, National Security and Policing, Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Inia Batikoto Seruiratu.
In his speech, Dr Ng warned that the world has become more divided than before. He said that the war in Ukraine has hardened security alliances while supply chain disruptions and inflation have prompted countries to turn inwards. He highlighted the close interdependency between Asian economies, and urged all countries to strengthen these mutually beneficial ties to build an inclusive and stable region.
Dr Ng also underscored the important role defence establishments can play in strengthening the regional security architecture. He cited the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting – Plus as a key platform for regional militaries to develop norms and mechanisms to de-escalate and avert conflict, for Asia's continued security and prosperity.
Dr Ng also hosted a Ministerial Roundtable after speaking at the plenary.
