DPM Teo Signs Joint Declaration to Establish ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean signed a Joint Declaration this afternoon, together with other ASEAN Defence Ministers, on the establishment of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM)-Plus, to mark the progress made by the ADMM in enhancing regional peace and security.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean signed a Joint Declaration this afternoon, together with other ASEAN Defence Ministers, on the establishment of the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM)-Plus, to mark the progress made by the ADMM in enhancing regional peace and security. The declaration was signed at a press conference which concluded the 4th ADMM held in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The 4th ADMM also agreed on the ADMM+8 format, welcoming eight countries - Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Russia and the United States of America - to join the inaugural ADMM-Plus meeting which will be held this October in Vietnam. The 4th ADMM also adopted two papers, namely, the "ADMM-Plus: Configuration and Composition" and the "ADMM-Plus: Modalities and Procedures". The ASEAN Defence Ministers' agreement to establish the ADMM-Plus in 2010 is in line with the ASEAN Leaders' guidance for the early implementation of the ADMM-Plus.
Apart from their discussions on the ADMM-Plus, the ASEAN Defence Ministers also exchanged views on regional security issues and commended the ASEAN militaries on the progress made in forging cooperation in areas such as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. They noted that the inaugural ASEAN exercise on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, to be co-hosted by the Singapore Armed Forces and the Indonesian National Defence Forces in 2011, would build confidence among the ASEAN militaries and enhance the region's capacity to deal with natural disasters.
