The P-8A Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) is an aircraft designed for maritime patrol equipped with anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. It was developed based on the Boeing 737-800 commercial aircraft and is operated by nine other countries around the world[1].
Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Capabilities. The P-8A MPA is equipped with advanced sonobuoys and acoustic processing capabilities. It is also armed with light-weight torpedoes. These systems allow the P-8A MPA to effectively engage submarines.
Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW) Capabilities. The P-8A MPA is also equipped with advanced radar systems, electro-optical/infrared cameras, and communication systems. The sensor suite and radar systems allow the conduct of a range of maritime missions. These systems allow the P-8A MPA to detect and track targets while simultaneously scanning for other potential maritime threats.
Search and Locate Capabilities. The P-8A MPA can also be deployed for search and locate missions by utilising (i) advanced radar systems and sensors to detect surface vessels; (ii) communication systems to enable coordinated search and locate operations with other rescue assets; and (iii) if fitted, deploy equipment such as life rafts and survival kits to aid the survivability of survivors.
Avionics. The P-8A MPA is fitted with advanced avionics as well as fly-by-wire control systems featured in the civil Boeing 737 aircraft. It will also be equipped with a customised suite of military avionics.
