370 Cadets Commissioned as SAF Officers

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Mr Lawrence Wong reviewed the Officer Cadet Commissioning Parade at the SAFTI Military Institute this evening. A total of 370 cadets, comprising 269 from the Singapore Army, 50 from the Republic of Singapore Navy and 51 from the Republic of Singapore Air Force, were commissioned as officers of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Mr Wong emphasised the need for a strong SAF. He said, "Our security requires a strong and credible SAF – one that can give weight to Singapore's voice on the international stage, enable us to stand firm in defence of our own interests, and ultimately, to keep all of us safe and secure."

Addressing the graduands at the parade, Mr Wong also underlined the important roles the newly commissioned officers play as future leaders of the SAF. He said, "Lead with conviction, lead by example. Inspire your soldiers, not just with words, but with actions. Imbue in them a strong sense of passion, purpose and commitment. Show them that our nation, our people, and our way of life are worth defending and fighting for… Lead not to elevate yourself or to pursue your own ambitions. Lead instead to advance the common good; lead for a higher purpose."

The parade marked the completion of 38 weeks of rigorous training at the Officer Cadet School. The realistic training conducted during the course sharpened the cadets' combat, planning and leadership skills. The newly commissioned officers will go on to assume command, instructional or staff appointment in the SAF. Also present at the parade were Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Sean Wat, senior Ministry of Defence and SAF officials, as well as families and friends of the newly commissioned officers.
