First introduced in 1995, the Total Defence (TD) Badge Programme for Uniformed Groups (UGs) aims to promote awareness of and participation in Total Defence among secondary school students in UGs. It uses the Appreciation, Application, and Advocacy model, with various modules designed to help cadets gain a deeper appreciation of TD, put TD into action, and be advocates for TD as they earn the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Badges.
The 2022 refreshed programme provides more opportunities for UG cadets to put Total Defence into action in the community, with a greater emphasis on self-directed learning, practical emergency preparedness skills, and active citizenry through volunteering. As part of the refreshed curriculum:
Cadets will complete a self-directed learning module on the Student Learning Space for an introductory lesson on TD, join a volunteer scheme to contribute at the community-level, and be equipped with CPR+AED certification, which could help to save a life in the future.
As part of the new requirements for the Silver badge, cadets will need to submit a storyboard for N.E.mation!, an annual TD animation competition organised by Nexus. This provides opportunities for cadets to delve deeper into a topic relevant to the six TD pillars and to reflect on the applicability of TD in everyday life, encouraging cadets to become advocates for TD.
