In response to media queries on the Singapore-Australia joint development of training areas in Australia, the following MINDEF statement was issued:
The selection of an alternative site in the vicinity of Townsville is consistent with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the Australian Department of Defence (ADoD). It will provide training areas for Singapore Armed Forces (SAF)’s requirement of training in Australia for up to 18 weeks with 14,000 troops per year over 25 years.
Land acquisition will be undertaken by Australia, and Singapore will not own any training land in Australia. The joint development of training areas is progressing satisfactorily as planned.
