RSN's Frigate RSS Steadfast Makes Port Call in Japan

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN)'s Formidable-class frigate RSS Steadfast called at the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF)'s Yokosuka Naval Base from 22 August to 5 September 2016.

During the port call, RSN Fleet Commander Colonel Cheong Kwok Chien called on Commander-in-Chief of the JMSDF Fleet Vice-Admiral (VADM) Yasuhiro Shigeoka and Commandant of Yokosuka District VADM Tetsuro Doshita.

RSS Steadfast participated in a naval exercise with the JMSDF's Takanami-class destroyer JS Takanami in conjunction with the port call. The exercise included tactical manoeuvres, communications drills and anti-submarine warfare procedures. As part of the professional exchanges between the two navies, ship visits and a naval aviation workshop were also conducted.

The interactions during the port call and the bilateral exercise enhanced mutual understanding and interoperability between the two navies. The port call and the bilateral exercise also underscore the warm and friendly defence ties between Singapore and Japan as the two countries celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations.

RSS Steadfast recently completed the multinational Rim of the Pacific Exercise (Ex RIMPAC) in Hawaii and is currently on the return leg of its three-month deployment.
